Exploration and Navigation Using Hierarchical Cognitive Maps
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe a spatial navigation model that uses a hierarchical representation of space. The model is able to explore exhaustively large environments and to plan paths between distant places, even though it uses a working memory with a limited capacity. By using a hierarchical structure, an agent with a limited working memory capacity has (a) a comparable performance to that of an agent with no working memory limitations, (b) a reduced number of connection values and (c) a shorter decision time. The model describes many properties of hierarchical spatial behavior in humans and animals. Potentially, the approach can also be applied to the design of robots able to navigate in large environments. Chapter Outline & Navigation

Evaluating cognitive maps for mobile robot navigation behaviour
This paper examines biologically inspired cognitive map models, which provide an artificial navigating agent with a topological map of places after an exploration and learning phase in a previously unknown environment. The evaluation requires analytical methods that either rate the cognitive map on the basis of the map’s features, or that rate the observed behaviour of the navigating agent. Som...
متن کاملQualitative Representation and Reasoning in Cognitive Maps: A Survey from Spatial Cognition Perspective
A comprehensive survey of qualitative representations in cognitive maps is provided in this paper from spatial cognition perspective. The necessity of qualitative representation for robot navigation and map building is discussed with emphasis on different forms of qualitative information represented in different cognitive maps. By discussing the main spatial representations, which are topologic...
متن کاملHierarchical cognitive maps
We describe a computational model of spatial navigation based on experimental studies conducted with human participants. The model builds and uses a hierarchical cognitive map of a large environment. Computer simulations show that the model correctly describes experimental results including hierarchical organization of space and distance estimation. Furthermore, the model predicts that reaction...
متن کاملA Hierarchical SLAM/GPS/INS Sensor Fusion with WLFP for Flying Robo-SAR's Navigation
In this paper, we present the results of a hierarchical SLAM/GPS/INS/WLFP sensor fusion to be used in navigation system devices. Due to low quality of the inertial sensors, even a short-term GPS failure can lower the integrated navigation performance significantly. In addition, in GPS denied environments, most navigation systems need a separate assisting resource, in order to increase the avail...
متن کامل" I Have Been Here before " an Investigation into Spatial Verbalizations in Hypertext Navigation
part of her PhD thesis deals with spatial cognition in digital environments. Another part of her thesis, deals with information presentation and evaluation of multimodal information in the medical domain. Abstract We conducted an explorative study to investigate whether hypertext users use spatial expressions to conceptualize cognitive actions they are involved in, and how these expressions rel...
